REVIEW: Illamasqua Beyond Powder Highlighter – Epic

Impulse buys. I feel like my life is full of them. Even worse, I love me a bit of Illamasqua, so when I walk by a counter or pop in store I just can’t resist buying something. That something normally comes with a reasonably high price tag and sleek black packaging. Recently, I just couldn’t resist this cushion of bronze, glowy, goodness!

Described as the ‘ultimate baked highlighter,’ these beyond powders come in two shades – OMG and Epic. OMG is a champagne shimmer (more suited to lighter skin tones) whereas Epic is a warm bronze (more suited to medium to deep skins tones). Now, you may be thinking, ‘Robyn, you’re very pale – why did you buy the darker of the two?’ At the time I had a slight tan, and when I tried both on my cheeks at the counter, OMG was a definite highlight on my skin tone, but i didn’t need another pale gold shade, whereas Epic could be used as more of a bronzy blush topper (on me at least) to give me a general glow. I liked this idea more. I have to mention here that with the shade I chose Illamasqua have produced a stunning highlight for skin tones far deeper than mine – which is rare to find – we need more colours like this!

You get 6.5 grams of product for £32, in comparison Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors retail for the same price in the UK and  contain 8 grams of product. This is just something to think about, but as I rarely (if ever) use up an entire highlight this didn’t concern me.

In terms of application, this was more subtle than I anticipated, which is either a good or bad thing dependent on your view. On me this meant that I could gently build rather than instantly look too bronzed on my cheeks and I must say it layered nicely. I’m not sure that this would have been great for me with the paler shade because if you want to blind people in space you’ve got to be willing to work with this, or apply wet. However, when wet you’re essentially applying liquid metal to your cheekbones – it’s intense!

In the swatches above you can see the golden micro shimmer running throughout but there is no chunky glitter to be found. Be prepared for the dryer feeling of this highlight due to it being a baked product. Additionally its important to note it really emphasises my skin texture even though I have quite smooth skin. You can see how the shade looks on my face below.

I think this shade is stunning and although my shade choice was a bit out-there (as a pale skinned gal), I’m so pleased to see a shade that would suit very deep skin tones. I love Illamasqua as a brand and although I was expecting a more intense highlight, I enjoy how it works as a blush topper!  If you’re buying this because you’re darker skinned you will appreciate the versatility of the baked product and its performance as an intense wet highlight (a bit too coppery for me).

Thank you for reading….
