American English Haircare

Haircare goals! Need I say more …

I love seeing new brands come into the market and I must say this one’s a cracker ! For the past few weeks I’ve been trying out American English hair care, the product of two men who really know their stuff. An American – Michael Kanyon (hairdresser to the stars) and, you’ve guessed it, an English-man! I was lucky enough to be invited along for an evening with the two by the lovely folks over at MMCL London so some of the images below are from that night (and Michael working his magic) and I can give you some more information about how the products were intended to be used from the men who created them!

All products focus on nourishing the hair at the same time as getting it ready for styling, and they’re all vegan. The entire product range includes:

  • American English Smooth Repair Shampoo, 250 ml, £23
  • American English Smooth Repair Conditioner, 250 ml, £25
  • American English Youth Repair Shampoo, 250 ml, £23
  • American English Youth Repair Conditioner, 250 ml, £25
  • American English Seaberry Dry Oil, 125 ml, £25
  • American English 24 Karat Thickening Lotion, 120 ml, £25
  • American English Wind and Sea Texture Mist, 125 ml, £23
  • American English Multivitamin Nourishing Spray, 120 ml, £23

This post is an overview of everything that I’ve tried – which is the majority of the range (bar the Wind and Sea mist and the Multivitamin Spray) plus a few tips and tricks on how to use them. You can find American English products in the UK at ASOS and John Lewis. You can also purchase over on the MMCL pro website and use the code BBPRO25 for 25% off if you’re a blogger!

The images below are of the gorgeous Elise aka Little Miss Plumful over on Instagram, after Michael had given her oodles of volume! If you want to see my thoughts on the products he used, keep scrolling.

American English Hair Care Overview | REVIEW

First off, lets talk about the packaging! The little squat bottles look high-end and I really love the gold foil effect. The bottles are very ‘blogger,’ if I do say so myself and it looks fab in pictures (which is always a bonus). The top has a little pop up cap so as to make it easy to store and not waste product.

The price for all of the products is either £23/£25 which for a high-end hair care brand is reasonable in my eyes so long as the products actually work!

So what about the product inside …

American English Smooth Repair Shampoo and Conditioner | REVIEW

The American English Smooth Repair Shampoo comes out of the bottle relativity thick and smells of tangerines. The scent it quite nostalgic to me and reminds me of holidays – which is never a bad thing – and I find it really lingers in the hair! A few people asked after the perfume I was wearing at work, when it was just this shampoo. This combination of shampoo and conditioner is desgined to smooth frizzy hair (hello me) and help fight against humidity. I find after using this my hair is considerably less hard to work with and also gets less static throughout the day. In fact, I love this so much, that I’ve gone through an entire bottle of the conditioner! One minor draw back to note, is that as the conditioner is quite thick, I find it can be difficult to get out  of the bottle.

American English Youth Repair Shampoo and Conditioner | REVIEW

The Youth Repair shampoo and conditioner focus on keeping life in coloured hair and revitalising dry or damaged hair. This formula is said to be ‘anti-ageing’ and protects colour and builds strength. As someone with very long, dyed blonde hair that takes a lot of bleach – this is my favourite combination out of the two. The Youth repair shampoo isn’t as strongly scented and is fair more viscous and transparent than the Smooth repair shampoo – I think this helps the product coat the hair and really protect it. The conditioner makes my hair look beautifully shiny but not greasy.

My ideal combination is the Youth Repair Shampoo and the Smooth Repair Conditioner.

If you want to look and feel gorgeous, try these two products out…
American English Seaberry Dry Oil | REVIEW

The American English Seaberry Dry Oil focuses on ‘eliminating frizz and static and giving you shine that won’t weigh you down.’ The scent is once again gorgeous (and impossible to describe) and because the oil is dry it doesn’t dampen and dishevel the hair. My hair looks healthy and shiny after a few sprays and this really is a quick fix for the most awful bad hair days. It’s wonderful to use in the morning to ‘wake my hair up’ and it’s also a luxurious experience.

Having this in my collection makes me want to try the Wind and Sea texture mist and see if it lives up to the hype of this one! One word of caution – do not use a lot of this as your hair will look way too shiny! This is my top pick from the entire range.

American English Thickening Lotion | REVIEW

The American English Thickening lotion was the main product that Michael focused on in his mini tutorial at the event. He explained how you could use it to style an entire look and give intense volume, without the heavy feeling of product weighing down the hair . The texture is that of a gel and mousse hybrid that sinks into the hair. I’ve been using Michael’s technique of applying this at the roots of my hair and then blow drying and also using to finish.

I must say my hair has never looked quite so bouncy and effortless. My boyfriend tells me I looks like I’ve got ‘sexy’ hair when I do this technique with the thickening lotion – so that can only be a good thing (if that’s what you’re going for!)

Overall, I couldn’t be more impressed with American English as a brand! Everything is so well targeted to a specific need that it’s easy to pick the products you want out of the collection. It was so lovely to meet everyone over at MMCL and even Michael himself to get the low-down on these goodies, it was such a fun night!
